Hschooler.net: A Social Network

As in other social networking sites, each member of Hschooler.net can create a personal profile. Each part of the profile can be set so that only certain groups (parents, family, trusted friends, all friends, all members, everyone) can see it. A student can choose the level of visibility within the boundaries set by his parents. An example would be if a parent has set it so that her son can share his cell phone number with any group up to trusted friends (parents, family, and trusted friends), but the student may decide this is information he wants to keep private and only allow his family members to see it.

Another popular feature of social networks is "status." The status widget lets a person type a short description of what they are currently doing (e.g. "dissecting a frog") or how they feel (e.g. "grossed out"). As with all other parts of the service, each member can determine who can see their status within the boundaries defined by parents.

Hschooler.net has many other social features including being able to send messages to other members, setting up common interest groups for discussions, keeping an online journal, and sharing your favorite Bible verses. Parents define which features each family member can use and how broadly family members can share with others in the Hschooler.net community. Over time, we plan to develop additional features to help with both online and offline activities that are critical to healthy social networking and especially homeschooling.
